Anti-discrimination laws exist, but if you are treated unethically, unfairly, or unkindly by your employer... it's not necissarily illegal. Employers know this, and many intentionally exploit it.
While "constructive discharge" is illegal, it is so hard to prove that supervisors actively engage in this behavior penalty free. Please normalize holding supervisors, managers, curators, CEOs, human resources, board members, etc, accountable.
When "Passion" for the job is in the job description, that's an instant red flag. How do these employers support passionate individuals long term? Do they have assistance for passion fatigue? How do they encourage a healthy work life balance? Do they expect you to work overtime, overly hard, over the holidays and all while being underpaid? Does management want to see employees "hungry" to rise in rank? Do they list themselves as an "Employer of Choice?" Ask yourself if that's because they take good care of their employees long term, or because many people are so passionate about that kind of work that they are willing to put up with abuse. High turnover in the workplace is telling. Do not be lured to leave your current position and move across the country without some assurance that your new position is permanent, and that you will be given every opportunity to succeed beyond any probationary period imposed by a potentially
predatory employer.
Get curious. Ask lots of questions. Human Resources can help, but often they enable, even encourage, unscrupulous management to run roughshod over employee rights promised by employment contracts and/or guaranteed by employment laws. There are many government agencies that can investigate poor treatment of employees. Retaliation and intimidation are never acceptable. Please report, file grievances, see something say something, blow that whistle to protect yourself and your coworkers. It's up to us.
